DISCOVERING REGIONAL AUSTRALIA
Mildura: Where the River Meets the Sun
A Place That Holds On
Nestled on the banks of the Murray River, Mildura sits where three Australian states meet — Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia. It’s a place shaped by sunshine, river life, and a strong sense of community, where country charm blends with rich history and an easy-going lifestyle.
I first arrived in Mildura because of my former partner, never imagining the town would eventually become so much more than just a stop along my journey. Even after that chapter of my life ended, something about Mildura held onto me. Over time, I fell in love with the town itself — its warmth, its people, and the quiet comfort it gave me while rebuilding my life and finding my own path again.
From the moment I arrived, I was drawn to the endless blue skies and sunshine that seem to shine almost every day here. Mildura’s laid-back culture, historic streets, and welcoming atmosphere instantly made me feel at home. There’s a calmness to the town that’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it yourself — a feeling that life moves a little slower, a little simpler, and a little more connected to what truly matters.
Life Along the Murray
One of my favourite things to do in Mildura is simply walking along the Murray River foreshore. There’s something grounding about it — the wide, slow-moving water, the rustling river gums, and the golden light that seems to linger longer here than anywhere else. It sets the tone for everything Mildura is about.
If you’re visiting, don’t miss a sunset cruise on one of the iconic paddlesteamers. Watching the sun melt into the Murray from the deck of a historic boat is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you’ve left.
For those who prefer to stay on solid ground, two riverside cafes deserve a special mention — The Boathouse and Dockside, both offering beautiful views straight over the water. There’s nothing quite like a morning coffee or a lazy afternoon drink while watching the river drift by. And beyond these two gems, the foreshore footpath is lined with more great spots to eat and drink — but I’ll save that deeper dive for a dedicated food blog, because Mildura’s café and dining scene deserves a post all of its own.
A Hidden Gem in the Semi-Arid Heart
What makes Mildura truly special is its regional feel — and a big part of that comes down to sunshine. Mildura is one of Australia’s sunniest cities, clocking up more sunny days per year than almost anywhere else in the country. That warmth isn’t just in the weather though — it radiates through the people, the pace of life, and the energy of the place itself.
All that sunshine also makes Mildura a playground for outdoor and water activities along the Murray. Whether you’re casting a line for a Murray cod at dawn, hiring a kayak and paddling through calm backwaters, or simply floating lazily on the river on a warm afternoon — there’s something for every kind of adventurer here.
If you’re planning a visit, my personal favourite time is autumn. The heat softens into something pleasant and gentle, the light turns golden, and the town feels wonderfully unhurried. Spring runs a close second — both seasons offer the kind of weather that makes you want to spend every hour outdoors.
It might surprise you to know that Mildura sits within a semi-arid landscape — a place where the outback begins to whisper at the edges of town. And yet, from that unlikely setting, something truly extraordinary has grown. Mildura is a hidden gem that rewards those willing to venture beyond the well-worn tourist trail, and I’ve barely scratched the surface of what it has to offer. There is so much more to uncover — from its food and wine scene to its ancient landscapes and rich history — and I can’t wait to share it all with you in the posts ahead.
